&lt;td&gt;Originally released as a &lt;a href="/group/universityprogram/educators/w/wiki/2051.dsp.aspx"&gt;DSP&lt;/a&gt;, the C2000 was recently re-classified as a microcontroller (MCU). This was largely due to it&amp;#39;s core functionalities, processing rate and applications. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, there are several features on the C2000 MCU that optimizes it for it&amp;#39;s tag line, &amp;quot;real-time controls&amp;quot;.
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;A separate math calculation engine that is able to do fixed and floating point calculations&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;High resolution PWM generators&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The ability to program trip zones, detections using the architecture&amp;#39;s built in interrupt vectors&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;Within C2000 there are three families. These families were created with certain features to be enhanced. It&amp;#39;s important to note that although these families may be referenced differently, they share the same software and support compatibility.

&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;a target="_blank" href="http://www.ti.com/mcu/docs/mcuproductcontentnp.tsp?sectionId=95&amp;amp;familyId=919&amp;amp;tabId=2883"&gt;Piccolo&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;/strong&gt; Optimized for Value. This is the primary family promoted in education for it&amp;#39;s features to cost ratio. This family also includes the widest selection of tools.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;a target="_blank" href="http://www.ti.com/mcu/docs/mcuproductcontentnp.tsp?sectionId=95&amp;amp;familyId=1414&amp;amp;tabId=2937"&gt;Delfino&lt;/a&gt;: &lt;/strong&gt;Optimized for performance. This is the family that will be featured in the application specific kits. Many times this family is released first with a Piccolo version following.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;td valign="top"&gt;Because of C2000&amp;#39;s legacy as a DSP, there are many courses that have implemented this hardware and material in teaching &amp;quot;DSP&amp;quot; concepts. The C2000 can fill two roles, DSP lab and controls lab. Courses such as signals and systems and real-time DSP can be easily taught using the advantages of the C2000 DSP core with floating point options. Concept materials such as real-time digital filtering (IIR, FIR, etc) using both audio algorithms and digital signal control are available on our &lt;a href="/group/universityprogram/educators/w/wiki/2038.c2000-teaching-rom.aspx"&gt;C2000 Teaching ROM&lt;/a&gt;. &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition, the C2000 has begun to take root in courses that require the general purpose flexibility found in microcontrollers, the specialization of analog peripherals, the robust-industrial communication interfaces and the algorithm computing power.&lt;/td&gt;
