To transition the battery monitor from SLEEP to ACTIVE mode, the host must send either a WAKE ping/tone or SLEEPtoACTIVE ping/tone to transition to ACTIVE mode.  The host must send the ping/tone because it cannot communicate with the device in SLEEP mode. 

The WAKE ping/tone wakes up and resets the device, so the host will need to reconfigure the device setting.  A SLEEPtoACTIVE ping/tone only wakes up the device.  

Finally, wait (~10ms shutdown to active transition + ~600us propagation of wake) x number_of_devices, before attempting any further communications.
