Dear TI Experts,

I am designing a motor drive system using a TI motor driver (e.g., DRV8245-Q1) to control a DC motor. The motor has a continuous operating current of 4A, but experiences a high inrush current of up to 20A during startup. I would appreciate your guidance on how to properly configure the inductance and capacitance on the VM power supply pin to ensure stable operation, avoid voltage droops, false overcurrent protection (OCP) triggering, or potential device damage.

Hi,

The bulk capacitance on VM needed to provide the desired operation will depend on the system requirements. The process to select bulk capacitance is broken down in this app note: Bulk Capacitor Sizing for DC Motor Drive Applications but as a general rule of thumb, we recommend 1-4uF of bulk capacitance per watt of power being driven.

I would also recommend taking a look at the DRV8245S-Q1EVM's tool page to get the hardware files for general recommendations for the hardware design for pi-filters, reverse polarity protection, etc.
