with the bq76930, a part which has CRC enabled, the intermittent behavior could only be attributed to a possible bus contention or a USB port issue on the PC/Laptop. Kill all other applications running in the background.
Check (1) the 6 cell connection are properly connected. i.e minimum 3 cell/group.
(2) bq76930 and bq78350( if using) should NOT be read at the same time due to bus collisions on the I2C.
(3) Turn off CB bits and try with a less complicated register setting.
