Hi,

I need to use 2x DRV8163S for BDC motor driving. The SPI version offers rich fault diagnosis functions. My questions are:

What is the functional safety level of the DRV8163S? Does it meet ASIL-B?

I am implementing a full-bridge DRV8163S using 2x half-bridge DRV8163S. My functional safety goal is to achieve ASIL-B level for fault/unintended motor drive. Can I meet my ASIL-B level requirement using SPI (internal fault diagnosis mechanism)? This means without adding an additional FET short-circuit fault diagnosis mechanism, only implementing FET fault diagnosis through the chip's internal FET short-circuit fault diagnosis mechanism and reading the data via SPI.

I would like to confirm again, as you mentioned, when two DRV8163-Q1s are used, can ASIL-D be achieved without additional FET fault diagnosis circuitry? I mean, it is only necessary to use the fault diagnosis mechanism inside the DRV8163-Q1, which is configured and reads the fault status via SPI.

Note: Our functional safety goal is the unintended triggering of the BDC motor function as ASIL-B.

Here is some supplementary material for your review. We used two DRV8163-Q1 (SPI version) FETs. for H-Bridge. diagnosis of the H-Bridge MOSFETs(Short circuit) relies on the internal fault diagnosis mechanism of the DRV8163-Q1, aiming to achieve at least ASIL-B functional safety. Please confirm this, does it meet the requirements?. Thank you!

I believe the concept we have for ASIL-D does not relay on any external fault diagnostics only what the DRV8163's provide but I will double check this. And for the review, I will aim to provide my notes/comments this week

This is correct, ASIL-D can be achieved without additional FAULT diagnosis with two DRV8163-Q1's driving a half bridge without additional FET fault diagnostics. the safety manual goes into more detail, but this relies on using the OLP feature on both devices to mitigate single point failure.
