The circuit in the red box, along with the FET connected to the BATDRV circuit in the evm, gives the bq24600 functionality similar to the other devices in the 600 family. It allows the IC to "select" where system power is coming from (battery or adapter).
Replacing them with a diode is perfectly acceptable.
